Wineries you can cycle to

In this article...

It's no secret that Hawke's Bay is famous for wine, and the area has become a grand destination for wine tourism.

Our motel is a great base for exploring the numerous Hawkes Bay wineries. With more than 30 wineries in the area, the choice is huge. Our advice is to choose 3 or 4 to visit and make the most of your time there – there’ll always be another day.

While car travel is an option, many guests borrow bikes from a local bike tour company to make the most of the day. We are lucky to have some fantastic wineries near our Taradale motel – within 1.5-10 kilometres.  The closest is in walking distance (for those who like to exercise), or you could look at hiring bikes for the day and making a real excursion. Feel free to ask us when booking for recommended bike rentals if that’s your choice.

The winery is one of the oldest in Hawke’s Bay – founded in 1897 and totally renovated in 1989. The renovation is incredible!

Mission Estate

When it comes to Hawkes Bay wineries, the Mission is an institution. Established in 1851 by pioneering French Missionaries, Mission Estate is New Zealand’s oldest winery and the birthplace of New Zealand wine. The building is immaculate, the grounds and views are superb, and the wine is excellent. It is a reasonably short walk from Church Road, and the Mission is 2.5 km from us. The oldest winery in New Zealand with stunning grounds, a fantastic restaurant and great wine in a historic setting.

Moana Park

Moana Park is a boutique producer focusing on minimal intervention and low-allergy wines. They make vegan wines – if you ever wondered how wine could not be vegan, these are the people to ask. Situated in scenic Puketapu just 5.5 km from us. The bike trail near the river is an easy flat ride and great fun for all.

10.0 km

Crossroads

Crossroads has brought wine lovers the best of Hawke’s Bay small parcel wine-making for over 20 years. The quality and craft of Crossroads wines continue to be recognised at home and abroad, with accolades including Best New Zealand Red Wine for Crossroads Winemakers Collection Syrah 2012 and NZ Wine Producer of the Year. Make sure to ask about their secret “Talisman” blend. Located 10 km from us, Crossroads is the longest trip of the Napier wineries in our top four. It is well worth the trip with a long heritage of award-winning wines. Make sure to ask about “Talisman” – their secret blend.
