Horse of the Year is one of Hawkes Bay’s most prestigious annual events, with people coming from all over the world to be part of the greatest equestrian celebration in the southern hemisphere. Horse of the Year started in Hawke’s Bay 17 years ago and has grown at a phenomenal rate, now attracting over 2,600 horses, 1,800 riders and 84,000 attendees. This year’s event will be held earlier in March than normal, running from the 1st to the 6th of March at the A&P Showgrounds.
The show has 28 arenas in which dressage, mounted games, polo, show jumping and para-equestrian are just a few of the disciplines demonstrated during the week-long event. Horse of the Year is also a place where riders and horses can put their skills to the ultimate test and compete for Horse of the Year honours in a variety of disciplines and styles. The annual event boasts 8,000 square meters of shopping, with exhibitors from all over the world selling and demonstrating everything an equestrian lover could want. Horse of the Year has become renowned for their entertainment line-up, with Friday nights being reserved for “Hawke’s Bay Today Equestrian Extravaganza”; a show featuring exciting equestrian entertainment, performances from top international acts and plenty of fun for the kids. Other events such as the “Horse of the Year After Party” and the “Hall of Fame Gala Dinner” are also popular events, where attendees can mix with well-known equestrian personalities.
