If you’re in town this summer, make it a priority to visit one of the many Hawkes Bay beaches. Our region has over 350 kilometers of golden sandy beaches which all offer excellent swimming, fishing and surfing opportunities.
Waimarama is a small community just a half hour drive from Havelock North with one of the most popular beaches in the Bay. Both locals and visitors to the area love this beach for it’s long stretches of sand perfect for walking, patrolled water and great fishing opportunities. There is a domain nearby, perfect for family picnics, as well as a general store and seaside cafe.
Another popular destination, Ocean Beach is a relatively undeveloped coastal area closer to town than Waimarama. This beach is great for surfing and is also patrolled by lifesavers. However, if swimming isn’t what you’re after, there are two great walks along the beach: either south towards Waimarama (7.5 kilometeres one way) or north towards Cape Kidnappers (8 kilometers one way).
Waipatiki is a small, picturesque settlement 40 minutes from Napier. The beach here is full of golden sand and is sheltered between two cliffs. The area is surrounded by a native bush reserve full of New Zealand wildlife.
Tongoio is a coastal settlement north of Napier, before Waipatiki. The beach here is popular for many recreational activities, including fish, diving, swimming and walking. The Tongoio area is also rich in Maori history, with many walking tracks to immerse yourself in the past.
Located an hour south of Hastings, is the historic coastal community of Porangahau. The beach here is full of golden sand, perfect for surf casting, flying kites with the kids or just lying back to soak up the Hawkes Bay sun. The area also has some incredible fishing and diving spots.
